open glottis pushing | labor + delivery tip

I have had three vaginal deliveries, all very unique and different for a variety of reasons. But two of the three I used an open glottis pushing technique and it was a game changer. I felt more connected to my body, pushed when I felt I needed to push, had less fatigue and no pelvic floor tearing. There is now research backing this technique up as well as loads of anecdotal evidence. And whether you choose to use this technique or not, is entirely up to you and what will work best for you, however I feel all women should know their options.

Typically women are told to bear down, hold their breath and push for upwards of 8-10 seconds (Valsalva Maneuver) during the active stage of labor. This can limit oxygen to both mom and baby, as well as place a tremendous amount of pressure on the pelvic floor. Which is why this technique can actually lead to a faster pushing phase due to the high amount of pressure produced.

However using an open glottis technique allows the mom to push when she wants to push (working with the uterine contractions), slowly exhale while she is pushing to take some of the pressure off the pelvic floor and therefore potentially cause less pelvic floor dysfunction…this is HUGE!

I love working with women in the last weeks of pregnancy on how to use this open glottis technique in various positions of labor. It allows her body to develop some muscle memory for it. And it’s just another tool in the tool box that will make women feel more empowered and prepared.
